What is Diabetes?
Diabetes occurs when your body can't properly use or produce insulin, causing high blood sugar levels.
Types of Diabetes

Daily Diabetes Care
Check Your Blood Sugar
Your doctor will tell you:
- How often to check
- What your target numbers should be
- When to call if numbers are too high or low
Take Medications as Prescribed
- Take at the same time each day
- Don't skip doses
- Tell your doctor about side effects
Eat Healthy Foods
- Vegetables and fruits
- Lean proteins
- Whole grains
- Limit sugary drinks and processed foods
- Watch portion sizes
Stay Active
- 30 minutes of activity most days
- Check blood sugar before and after exercise
- Carry fast-acting sugar (glucose tablets, juice)
Prevent Complications
Feet
- Check daily for cuts, blisters, or redness
- Wear comfortable shoes
- Keep feet clean and dry
Eyes
- Get dilated eye exam yearly
- Report vision changes immediately
Teeth
- Brush twice daily, floss daily
- See dentist every 6 months
Warning Signs
High Blood Sugar:
- Extreme thirst
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
Low Blood Sugar:
- Shaking, sweating
- Confusion
- Fast heartbeat
If low, eat 15g fast-acting carbs (4 glucose tablets, ½ cup juice), wait 15 min, recheck.
